Background

NASA, renowned for its complex and ambitious space missions, was struggling with the inefficiencies of traditional data management methods. With numerous programs and projects running concurrently, the organization faced challenges in managing large volumes of project data and ensuring accurate, efficient reporting and analysis.

Manual data entry, disparate data sources, and inconsistent data formats contributed to labor-intensive processes, high error rates, and delayed decision-making. These issues not only increased operational costs but also hindered the agency's ability to effectively monitor and control project performance.

To overcome these obstacles, NASA identified the need for a robust data management solution that could:

  • Streamline Data Integration: Seamlessly combine data from multiple sources, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
  • Automate Data Transformation: Reduce the manual effort required to process and prepare data for analysis.
  • Enhance Reporting Capabilities: Provide timely and reliable insights to support strategic decision-making.
  • Improve Data Visualization: Facilitate better understanding and communication of project performance through intuitive dashboards and visual tools.

Challenges:

  • Labor-intensive data management processes
  • High error rates and data inconsistencies
  • Inefficient reporting and analysis

"The implementation of Proteus Envision and Envision Data has revolutionized our data management processes, significantly reducing manual labor and boosting efficiency across our projects."

Implementation

NASA implemented Proteus Envision and Envision Data Transformer, two COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) solutions designed to optimize data management for integrated project, program, and portfolio management (IPPM). These tools allowed NASA to automate data transformation using ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) technology, ensuring accuracy and consistency from source data to final reports.

Key Features:

  • Automated Data Transformation and Loading: Streamlined processes reduced manual labor and ensured data accuracy.
  • Integration with Various Data Sources: Enabled a unified view of data across different systems.
  • Visualization and User Interaction Capabilities: Intuitive dashboards and visual tools enhanced data comprehension and communication.
  • No-Code/Low-Code Configuration: Allowed for rapid deployment and customization without extensive technical expertise.

By implementing Proteus Envision and Envision Data Transformer, NASA successfully transformed its data management approach, leading to significant improvements in efficiency, accuracy, and overall project performance.

some of the applications used

  • filter by role:
  • Analyst: Risk
  • Analyst: Schedule
Variance Analysis Reporting
Flags variance breaches and allows for Format 5 variance inputs, links to documentation, and full visualization of all aspects of the process.
IPMR Schedule Compare
Highlights schedule changes, tracks undocumented changes, date, duration, logic, code and criticality changes. Useful in tracking undocumented or ad hoc changes that will create erroneous IMS submissions
Time-phasing Compare
Allows the comparison of two time-phased EV data periods, identifying discordant WBS changes and assisting in tracking retroactive changes for consistent planning and execution in cost performance progress calculation and reporting.
PPM Dashboard**
Project, Program and Executive Management.
EVM and Schedule Performance
Reports and visualizes level 1 performance data across projects and programs to easily compare performance, providing data regarding differences among project and program performance, and future planning and execution data.
